A practical guide to timing your bridal alterations, from the day your gown arrives to the final fitting before the wedding.
Your gown has arrived. Now what? Timing alterations well takes a lot of stress out of the final weeks before a wedding. This is a general guide. Every gown and every bride is different, and your seamstress will tailor the plan to you.
As soon as your gown arrives
Try it on, check it for any damage from shipping or the store, and reach out to book your first fitting. You don’t have to start alterations right away, but getting on the calendar early gives you the most flexibility, especially during busy wedding seasons.
Around two to three months before the wedding
This is when many brides have their first fitting. At this appointment:
- You’ll put the gown on with your wedding shoes and undergarments.
- The fit is pinned: hem, bodice, straps, sleeves and anything else that needs attention.
- You’ll talk through the bustle, if your gown has a train.
- You’ll get a clear plan for the work, the timeline and the price.
Starting at this point leaves room for the work itself and for a follow-up fitting without rushing.
In between: additional fittings if needed
Simple changes may need only a first and final fitting. Gowns with multiple layers, lace or beading, or bigger fit changes, may need a fitting in the middle to check progress.
A gown should be fitted to the body you’ll have on the wedding day, so it helps to let your seamstress know about anything that might change the fit, like new shapewear or different shoes.
About two to four weeks before the wedding
Your final fitting. You’ll try on the finished gown, practise the bustle (bring whoever will be helping you on the day), and make any last refinements.
Short on time?
It’s not always possible, but it’s worth asking. Rush availability depends on the schedule and on what your gown needs. Call with your wedding date and an honest answer is the fastest way to know your options.
