Shoes, undergarments, accessories and a few other things that help your wedding dress fitting go smoothly and get the fit right.
A fitting is where your gown starts becoming yours. A little preparation makes the appointment faster, calmer and more accurate. Here’s what to bring.
Your gown
It sounds obvious, but bring the gown along with anything that came with it: a detachable train, sash, straps, sleeves or extra fabric. Extra fabric and spare beads or appliqués can be very useful for alterations.
Your wedding shoes
The hem is measured to the shoes you’ll actually wear. Even a small change in heel height changes how a gown falls. If you haven’t chosen shoes yet, bring a pair with the same heel height you’re planning on.
The undergarments you’ll wear on the day
Your bra, shapewear, slip or petticoat all affect how the bodice fits and how the skirt sits. Fitting the gown over the same foundation garments you’ll wear on the wedding day gives the most accurate result.
Accessories that affect the fit
- A belt or sash that will sit at the waist
- Your veil, if it attaches near the bodice or you want to see the full look
- Any jewellery that interacts with the neckline or straps
Inspiration photos
If you have ideas about how the gown should look, such as a bustle style, a strap change or a sleeve, photos are the quickest way to share them.
The person helping you on the day
At your final fitting especially, it helps to bring whoever will be bustling your gown on the wedding day so they can learn how it works.
A few questions
It’s your appointment, so ask anything. Good ones to start with:
- How many fittings will my gown need?
- When should the final fitting be?
- What will the work cost, and what affects that price?
